An old-fashioned form of continuous lighting once used extensively in studio and portrait photography but now superseded by more powerful and energy-efficient flash systems.
Tungsten lights run very hot, don’t produce a great deal of light by today’s standards and have a lower colour temperature than daylight, so white balance correction is needed.
If you do need continuous lighting, there are much more efficient solutions. Halogen lamps are brighter and produce less heat, and LED panels are really taking off as the most modern and efficient form of continuous lighting.
